Our society is slowly changing its stereotypes but there are still quite a few about men.  A man should be strong, intelligent, a leader, ambitious, a provider, assertive, etc.  These views really haven’t changed much but one thing that has changed is that women are allowed to be these things too now, at least to some degree.  Although, you would think as our views of gays(or at least flamboyant ones) change, it would help our culture see that men don’t have to be strong manly men anymore.  Instead, I think America is just grouping gays in with women…they’re not real men anyways right?  Any man now-a-days who wants to wear nice clothes and groom himself is automatically gay in our eyes.

I’m sure this puts a lot of pressure on guys to act tough and play football or basketball even if they really just want to act in the school play (reference to high school musical not intended).  I feel like girls view guys different now though because they want to be equal so they understand what boys go through when they aren’t the big man on campus.  I feel like the reason we haven’t made more progress with masculinity is because guys constantly compete against each other for the alpha male position and they won’t let themselves or other men become “weak” or they’re kicked outta the pack(an example would be those 2 or 3 guys in our class who love to mutter “gay” whenever a guy is refered to as being non-typical and then they all laugh because like it’s hilarious).  I think its human nature and is always gonna be that way to some extent.

1. This girl, Abby, seems to be a conservative lutheran who loves to watch tv and movies.  Also, she looks a bit flighty to me and I am justified in this assumption by all of the celebrity quotes on her FB.

2. She provides her full name, age, education info, and her email and screen name.

3.   Her taste is music is all mainstream and bad mainstream at that, except for Elton John.  I love that diva.  Her taste in movies is possibly worse: typical female movie (the notebook), several childrens movies which is just weird, dumb comedies, and brat pack 80s movies which are only good in moderation.  Her taste in books impressed me the most because she didn’t have the typical “i hate books” answer.  She even had down One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest which impressed me.

4.  The purpose of her FB is to stay in touch with old friends and to make new ones.  I can tell because she doesn’t have anything about networking on there and doesn’t seem weird enough to date online.  She’s just a typical college student looking to keep in touch with people by stalkbooking.

The second half of the movie did a total 180.  Some of my thoughts from the first post are def. different now.  I’m still shocked and don’t know what to say, and I’m not sure if I ever will.  Like we talked about briefly after the movie ended, people are extremely uncomfortable talking about anything race related.  I’m pretty sure the main reason for this is because white people are afraid of saying anything that might appear racist whether they mean to or not.  I think this accounts for how far racism of blacks has come in the last 50 years.  The fact that I have analyzed everything I have written about bamboozled to make sure it doesn’t seem racist is a testament to the outrage that racism sparks from the population.  Look at any celeb that has uttered a racist remark, especially the n word, and check out what happened to them and their career.  They are pretty much done: dog the bounty hunter, don imus, and michael richards are just the most recent.  In my last post I said that Spike Lee is looking for racism that isn’t there, well after watching the second half I feel like maybe I’ve been burying my head in the sand.  Maybe I just don’t see it cause I’m white, but that doesn’t change the fact that I don’t think it needs to be this big of an issue anymore.

I should clarify my last statement, I don’t think racism of blacks is that prominent anymore, or at least compared to the racism of mexicans.  Mexicans are the new Blacks.  They are the most hated race in America and not just by whites either, everyone hates them.  In 50 or so years, my grandchildren are going to be writing blog posts about a movie dealing with racism, and by then when you think the word racism, you won’t think of a black person, you’ll think of a hispanic.  For this reason, I don’t think racism should be such a big fuckin deal because it is always gonna be there whether its blacks, asians(WWII), or mexicans and it sucks!  But that’s life.  There is always gonna be discrimination: racism, sexism, ageism, homophobia, etc, etc, etc.  There is something about everyone that they can be discriminated for.  Even white males: if they are gay, old, or overweight can be hated on and that sucks but it’s human nature and there is pretty much nothing that can be done.  This might seem racist to some people because I’m kinda saying GET OVER IT, but that’s not my intention.  My intention is to say that everyone gets discriminated against and that’s not gonna change, so just let it go because if you don’t you’re just gonna become jaded and pissed at the world for it being that way.

I haven’t really written much on the movie itself because I don’t know what to say.  It is grossly exaggerated and made me roll my eyes several times.  I know it is supposed to be exaggerated for satirical purposes and to get the point across, but I don’t like how it made me feel: indignant.  I know there is racism but when I see it portrayed so harsh and ridiculously it makes me go on the defense.  Although, the movie was outrageous at some points it did get its message across and whether the movie helped the anti-racism movement or not, it did make people think more about the issue so it got the job done.

Now just to touch on another thing we talked about in class I just wanna say a couple of things about rap.  Yes, it’s all good if you wanna show your money and women because you grew up poor and you’ve managed to hit it big, but you are screwing yourselves.  You are making the whole black population lose its respect because while teens might like to listen to your music, they don’t respect that culture.  You are preforming just like Spike Lee said, you are the new blackface.  You know why rappers publicity blows up if they get shot?  Cause that shit doesn’t happen in suburbia and it’s fascinating.  But that fascination doesn’t equal respect, more like the exact opposite cause those same kids like to watch from afar but don’t want that shit in their backyard.  Rappers play up every negative stereotype out there and it’s sad.  When a little kid turns on MTV,VH1, or BET what message are they getting from rappers?  All blacks love to drink, smoke pot, aren’t well educated, love to fuck some hos, and shoot up some snitches.  The truth is blacks are partly responsible for some of the racism in this country.  Of course once those kids grow up they should realize the image rappers give off isn’t the correct one, but by then maybe the damage is done.  I wonder what is going to happen in 10 years when those kids who have grown up in a period where rap is HUGE.  Will there be more racism because of it…will the movement backslide?  I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

I can’t believe I’ve written this much on this issue.  I’m sooo tired of it.  Hopefully that’ll change before next thursday, although I doubt I’ll say any of this in class cause I’d prob. have 20 people jump all over me before I can even explain my argument.

I’m completely unsure of what to say about the movie so far…should I laugh or stare with a horrified look on my face?  My feelings mirror the audiences when they were filming the pilot episode.  At some points(mostly before the pilot was filmed) the movie was hilarious generally because of all the sterotypes that were played up to extremes.  Then the movie took a serious turn once they started filming more episodes and you could see the character’s views changing.

I think this movie has good intentions, but I don’t see it changing anyones mindset.  Change doesn’t come through movies, it comes through time.  Spike Lee has used his ability as a director, producer, actor, and writer to create several movies dealing with race.  He has tried to change the way “white” people think and I’m not sure if he has accomplished or will accomplish this goal.  His in your face approach puts “white” people on the defense.  To me Spike Lee is like a conspiracy theorist, always looking for something to fight about whether that be who really killed Kennedy or examining everything people say to find something racist.  It’s like when “black” people say “Is it cause i’m black” or “what do you mean by people” as a joke…i know it’s supposed to be funny but at the same time I think they kinda mean it and that is ridiculous because it’s looking for something that simply isn’t there.

I’m not sure movies like this help at all because it is so exageratted(i imagine) it manages to piss a lot of “black” people off…if I were “black” and was watching this movie it would only serve as a reminder to the times when we were treated like shit and it would make me think that people still view “blacks” as beneath them.  I would be outraged and probably want to punch a “white” person in the face for laughing at some of the jokes.  So how do these types of entertainment help?? It manages anger both races instead of uniting them.

This whole arguement has made me flash back to my feminist days(in 10th and 11th grade) I was a total fem nazi.  I would start an argument with guys(or sometimes girls) if they said the slightest thing that seemed sexist.  During this time I became obsessed with Alanis Morissette who I still love but take with a grain of salt now.  I would go to church and see all the men leading the congregation and I would feel all this hate for the unjust  hand that I had been dealt.  Did my resentment help? Did my many arguements help? NO! They only caused guys to see me as a ball buster and a bull dyke, which I am neither.  It didn’t change anybodies views, but it did put plenty of boys on the defense and probably make them resent the feminist movement.  Once I realized this, I stopped looking for things to be angry at and am a lot happier now.  Of course I’ll still be outraged if someone says something blatantly sexist just like Spike Lee has a right to be pissed if someone says something blatantly racist, but now I realize that there is a lot less sexism out there than I thought.  Spike Lee should realize there is a lot less racism out there too.

If anyone takes offense to my post then comment and we can discuss it, but I don’t claim to be PC and I’m not a sensitive person who reallys cares about others views.  I care about my opinion and probably won’t change it but you can certainly try  ; – )

Topic Proposal for Final Paper

I will be doing a “How to Find Good Fanfiction” essay.  My essay will probably be step-by-step guide into the fanfiction world to discover and write a set pattern to find good fic.  I’m going to be diving into the deep, dark world of bad fanfic.  I’ll have to swim fast through anime infested waters and hopefully make it to the good fic side unscathed and without having turned into a Japanese character.  I’m going to warn people which sites are acceptable and which should be avoided at all costs.  I’ll show you how to wade through the bad fic, to the okay fic, and finally to the good fic.  It’s a process that shouldn’t be attempted alone, right after eating, or without the proper coach.

I chose this book because I use to listen to all the bands listed in this book and many more.  In tenth grade I really got into this thing called emo that only a few people knew of back then and I loved it at first because I thought it was cool to listen to bands that none of my friends knew but I continued to love it because of the catchy choruses and the angst which reflected how the 15 year old Albrainer felt.  I felt like a badass when I listened to Hawthorne Heights and Taking Back Sunday(now I don’t know why).  I was so hardcore I started getting piercings which I still love but I have taken some of them out now.  I had all the band t-shirts and loved to mosh but grew out of that stage by senior year although I still enjoy rockin’ out in the car to some old school Senses Fail.

I hope to find out why everyone believes emo is a bad thing cause I always loved listening to it and it made me feel great…I was never into cutting myself and have never be depressed in my life.  I loved the whining, screaming, and lyrics that talked about typical teenage stuff.  Oh yeah and I never wore all black…I dress the same now as I did then except with more Gamecocks stuff.

I read the title of the book and thought that it sounded interesting and it was something that I already knew a lot about.

Here is a video of Amber Pacific singing Poetically Pathetic.  AP is a band I still listen to.   I love to blast this shit!

The blogs tell more personal experiences than news sources.  News sources tend to tell broad things and focus on something big while blogs talk about something that was big to the blogger.  The story that matters most is probably very different to these sources.

When I found out some of the bloggers used to work for news sources that made me think less of their blog because they could be bias toward or against their old employers depending on whether they ended on good terms or not.  Either way it’s not the type of blog I want to read.

I feel like information on the blogs is of about the same reliability as the major news sources.  Both are biased, just in different ways.  The military blogs are biased towards the war and military because that is their job and their lifestyle.  News sources are bias towards whatever their bosses or the government want them to say.

I don’t really care about other countries culture, but I do plan on traveling a lot starting when I study abroad.  I plan on going to Italy or Spain.  I might have to learn a little about their culture before I go so I’ll fit in but I don’t plan on spending a lot of time on it.  Also, I plan on going on a cruise next Christmas vacation.  I just received my passport and I’m ready to experience some new things and see more of the world.

I do love popular culture.  I love gossiping about celebrities and I love looking at www.perezhilton.com.  I love movies, music, and I could watch TV for a living.  But I’m not a fan of things like politics and anything serious.  I’m a fun type of girl who likes to have a good time and if something bores me, I’m changing the channel.

Our society loves pop culture just like me so we cause the paparazzi to hound celebs so we can get that juicy picture of them snorting some coke.  Our society is materialist because of our love for pop culture.  We want everything the celebs have and some people think that is why our culture is on the decline.  Screw those people.  Our culture isn’t on the decline, it is just evolving into something new, and that scares old guys who are just sitting around hugging their bible.  America isn’t the next Sodom and Gomorra and we are not going to be destroyed so stop thumping your bible and start living your life cause you never know when that’s going to end.

But who gives a shit about anyone else’s culture??  I don’t.  All I care about is myself.  I’m a typical American.  I don’t care about what other counties think about America either because they are just jealous.  French people are pompous anyways and Middle Easterns think our women are sluts but I think they are all terrorists so I guess it evens out.  Why should we have to learn about cultures…how is that helping us?  How is that making us smarter and furthering our education?  We are just going to forget about everything we learned because I doubt anybody really cares.  We are too busy socializing and having fun in this culture to really care about anybody else’s.  We travel to enjoy new sights and sounds not to learn how they hold their forks or greet their friends.

I don’t have much time to write this cause I have a quiz to study for and I just got back into columbia from Fort Mill.

I went to the Alanis Morissette and Matchbox 20 concert on Tuesday night and it was great! I love Alanis but Matchbox 20 was very good too and they both put on a good show. I might give more details at a later date but now I have to go. Peace.
